Norman Takeuchi was born to Japanese parents and grew up in Vancouver. His work is a moving expression of his struggle and ultimately his success in finding the harmony, resolution and beauty that comes with inheriting two distinct cultures. He draws deeply on memories of his family's relocation during World War II. Delving into the upheaval of internment, denial and conflict, he explores his Japanese heritage while embracing European-based abstract expressionism.

A graduate of the Vancouver School of Art, Norman Takeuchi’s early career combined exhibition design (Expo 67, Expo 70, Canadian Museum of Nature) with painting. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Canada Council Art Bank; Carleton University Art Gallery; Confederation Gallery, Charlottetown, P.E.I.; The Ottawa Art Gallery; Mitel Corporation; and in private collections in Canada and abroad.

Norman Takeuchi now has a major retrospective exhibition at the Ottawa Art Gallery: “Six decades of art, in Retrospective” at OAG until August 2023.
