"I started this piece twenty years ago and just revisited it in 2023. It features a record which was one of my first introductions to jazz, the vinyl record called Basie Jam. This record was one of several that Count Basie recorded in his home with some of the greatest players of the jazz world in NYC at that time, all his friends. The sessions are known as some of the best examples of the music of that era. This 1973 album was Basie's first album withNorman Granz' newly founded Pablo Records. "Pablo" refers to Granz' close friend,Pablo Picasso. The logo is actually an excerpt from a Picasso artwork. Let me tell you - recreating that logo was one of the most difficult parts of doing this painting."
