Born and raised in Manitoba, Josh Silburt (1914 – 1991) was a prolific artist, political activist and cartoonist. He struggled to overcome the poverty of his childhood to pursue the dream of becoming a mainstream visual artist. He studied at the Winnipeg School of Art under L.L. Fitzgerald then rode the rails to Toronto in the 1930s where he found work as a sports and political cartoonist while continuing to study at the Ontario College of Art.

Josh's left wing politics collided with his professional life in the early days of the Cold War. At the end of the Stalin era, Josh, along with many of his cohort in the Communist left wing, abandoned their political ideals and set their lives in a new direction. Josh and a small group of landscape painters would meet at the Willowdale Art Group in north Toronto to focus on interpreting the Canadian wilderness.

Over the next three decades, Josh developed his unique style of palette knife application of vivid oil impasto and later brushed acrylics, capturing the beauty and ruggedness of Canada.
