Norman Takeuchi & Susan Ukkola

Tuesday March 4th, 2014 to
Sunday March 30th, 2014

Thu Mar 6th, 2014 — 6:00 pm - 9:30 pm

The duality of being Japanese Canadian is at the heart of Takeuchi’s work. “Unsettling and uncomfortable abstract forms allude to the early exclusion years jostled with images of old Japan. The paintings represent an uneasy search for harmony and balance between the two worlds, ultimately a celebration of my dual heritage.”

Ukkola’s art involves fusing a thick, translucent layer of beeswax to a milk paint-primed panel. She then scrapes away some areas to reveal underlying nuances, scars or ‘beauty marks’.  “I work spontaneously, intuitively allowing the work to evolve as it will. These paintings are a mixture of light hearted and dead serious themes.”
