Nuit Blanche 2014 Vernissage
Saturday September 20th, 2014
7:00 pm - 1:00 am
Rebecca Mason & Reid Mclachlan (redcanoes) pay homage to the vanishing ancient trails that bypass the falls and rapids of our urban rivers. Are these paths of avoidance, safety, endurance, loss or discovery? Follow the signs and decide for yourself.
Ottawa, a region where rivers meet, was once a place of danger. The falls and rapids of the Rideau, Ottawa and Gatineau Rivers were perilous obstacles to be avoided, bypassed, portaged around. Most of the tangible evidence and knowledge of these portage trails has vanished from our urban landscape and collective memory. Artistic duo, redcanoes--Rebecca Mason and Reid McLachlan--team up on this multi-media installation that pays homage to the memory, tradition and spirit of the portage. Is it a path to safety? A path of avoidance? A path for contemplation, discovery, anguish? Follow the signs through the ubiquitous underbrush to Cube Gallery and see for yourself. Not to be missed at this year's Nuit Blanche!
Reid and Becky's canoe will be featured on the sidewalk outside of Cube Gallery with a portage right across the street to Twiss & Weber where you can meet the artists!
