Like Father , Like Daughter Vernissage

Sunday August 26th, 2012
2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Kathy Haycock grew up in the Ottawa community of Westboro surrounded by the art of her father, acclaimed plein air painter Maurice Haycock and that of his painting partner, A.Y. Jackson. This show is a tribute to the poignant interpretations of untamed nature by father and daughter. Now deceased, Maurice Haycock's work remains widely recognized for his vibrant paintings of the Arctic and sensitive renderings of Ontario's rural places. In Like father, Like Daughter, Kathy Haycock's work is a touching tribute to their respect for the unadorned wilderness.

As a geologist and landscape painter Maurice Haycock travelled extensively in the  north from 1927 to 1987. He died in 1988 and is now known as Canada’s foremost  Arctic artist. See his official website here.

Daughter Kathy began painting a decade later. She grew up surrounded by Maurice’s art and that of his long time painting  partner, A. Y. Jackson. "They both had a major influence on my work," she  says, "but of course I am very pleased and honoured to be exhibiting next to  my father." Now an award-winning artist, Kathy lives near Eganville  Ontario. She travels widely to paint and exhibit in juried shows across Canada  including the high Arctic, the Northwest Territories, the Yukon  and  Alaska.

"All of the  paintings describe the essence of a certain place, at that hour or two in time  when the artist visited and painted," says curator Don Monet. "What strikes me about their work is there is no attempt to make a pretty or decorative  statement, but instead a most loving rendering of the raw, untamed beauty of nature or of a particular scene. There is a strength and rhythm contrasted by  an occasional delicate detail, like a spot of light or colour."
