Canadian artist Kristy Gordon’s work is an expression of the bittersweet transitions of life, offering dreamlike scenes and portraits that range from playful to introspective and candid. Her observations of people and herself evoke vulnerability and authenticity paired with the surreal and whimsical that has come to identify work by this Canadian phenom.
Over the years Gordon's practice has evolved from seriously accomplished and formal paintings with a nod to the masters, to a mature melding of contemporary discourse with uncompromising traditional practices. She has an uncanny ability to imbue a figure with a verisimilitude both physical and psychological. Her work exhibits an innate ability to convey intimacy and honesty, and is a sincere act of artistic intuition.
In 2014 she received her MFA degree in Painting from the New York Academy of Art and holds a BFA in Drawing and Painting from the Ontario College of Art and Design. Additionally, she has studied classical drawing and painting at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto and Andreeva Portrait Academy in Santa Fe. She has also studied privately with artists including Yuqi Wang, Odd Nerdrum, Juan Martinez, and Jeremy Lipking. She has exhibited her work internationally and received: an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant in 2009; a Merit Award from the Salon International 2009; third place Portrait Society of Canada’s International Portrait Competition 2008, Best of Show in the National Art Premier, Illinois 2008; and named Top Finalist in the Art Renewal Center’s International 2008/2009 ARC Salon.
